Dumbbell Bench Press (Neutral Grip)

The neutral-grip dumbbell bench press is a horizontal pressing exercise performed lying on a bench with the palms facing each other. It primarily trains the chest while also working the triceps and front deltoids, supporting upper-body pressing strength and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit on a flat bench with a dumbbell resting on each thigh, using a neutral grip with palms facing each other.
  2. Lie back while bringing the dumbbells to chest level, with your feet planted firmly on the floor.
  3. Press the dumbbells upward until your arms are nearly straight, keeping the wrists stacked over the elbows.
  4. Lower the dumbbells slowly to the sides of your chest while maintaining control and a neutral grip.
  5. Finish the set by returning the dumbbells to your thighs before sitting up.

Technique tips

  1. Keep your shoulder blades gently pulled back and down against the bench throughout the press.
  2. Use a load that lets you lower both dumbbells evenly without losing wrist position.
  3. Avoid forcefully locking the elbows or allowing the dumbbells to drift far behind the chest.
  4. Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower the dumbbells.
