Dumbbell Seated Shoulder Press (Neutral Grip)

The dumbbell seated shoulder press with a neutral grip is an overhead pressing exercise performed while seated, with the palms facing each other. It primarily trains the deltoids, while the triceps assist with elbow extension. It supports upper-body pressing strength and shoulder control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit upright on a bench with back support, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with your palms facing each other.
  2. Place both feet firmly on the floor and brace your trunk while keeping your chest comfortably lifted.
  3. Press the dumbbells upward until your arms are nearly straight, keeping your wrists neutral and the weights over your shoulders.
  4. Pause briefly without forcefully locking the elbows or shrugging the shoulders.
  5. Lower the dumbbells slowly to shoulder height, keeping your elbows under or slightly in front of your wrists.
  6. Repeat with controlled movement, then return the dumbbells safely to your thighs or a stable surface.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a load that lets you keep your torso against the back support without excessive arching.
  2. Keep the dumbbells moving in a comfortable path rather than forcing them to touch overhead.
  3. Use a smooth, controlled lowering phase instead of letting the weights drop.
  4. Stop the set if you cannot keep the wrists neutral or the shoulders controlled.
