Dumbbell Standing Alternating Shoulder Press

The standing alternating dumbbell shoulder press is a vertical pressing exercise in which one dumbbell is pressed overhead at a time while standing. It primarily trains the shoulders and also involves the triceps, supporting upper-body pressing strength and overhead control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward.
  2. Brace your abdomen, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and keep both wrists neutral.
  3. Press one dumbbell overhead until your arm is straight without forcefully locking the elbow.
  4. Lower that dumbbell under control to shoulder height while keeping your torso upright.
  5. Press with the opposite arm and continue alternating sides for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Use a load that lets you avoid leaning backward or shifting your hips during the press.
  2. Keep the non-pressing dumbbell stable at shoulder height rather than letting it drift away from the body.
  3. Move smoothly and avoid using knee drive or momentum to start each repetition.
  4. Stop the set if you cannot keep the dumbbells and torso under control.
