Dumbbell Standing Alternating Shoulder Press (Neutral Grip)

The dumbbell standing alternating shoulder press is a unilateral overhead pressing exercise performed while standing with the palms facing each other. It primarily trains the shoulders and triceps while challenging upright body control, and it supports upper-body pressing strength and coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell at each shoulder with palms facing each other.
  2. Brace your core and keep your wrists stacked over your elbows.
  3. Press one dumbbell overhead until the arm is straight, without leaning or arching your lower back.
  4. Lower it under control to shoulder height while the other dumbbell stays racked, then press with the opposite arm.
  5. Continue alternating sides, then return both dumbbells safely to the starting position.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a load that allows you to keep your ribs down and torso steady throughout each press.
  2. Keep the non-pressing dumbbell close to the shoulder rather than letting it drift forward.
  3. Press smoothly and avoid using leg drive to move the weight.
  4. Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower the dumbbell.
