Dumbbell Sumo Squat

The dumbbell sumo squat is a wide-stance squat performed while holding a dumbbell. It primarily trains the quadriceps, glutes, and adductors while developing lower-body strength and control. The wide stance and turned-out foot position make it a useful squat variation for general lower-body training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand with your feet wider than hip width and turn your toes slightly outward.
  2. Hold one dumbbell vertically with both hands in front of your hips, keeping your chest lifted.
  3. Brace your midsection and sit down between your hips, bending your knees in line with your toes.
  4. Lower under control to a comfortable depth while keeping your heels on the floor and your back neutral.
  5. Press through your feet to stand tall, extending your hips and knees without forcefully locking them.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a stance width that lets your knees track comfortably in the same direction as your toes.
  2. Keep the dumbbell close to your body to help maintain balance and a steady torso position.
  3. Maintain pressure through your whole foot rather than shifting onto your toes or outer foot edges.
  4. Use a load that allows you to keep the descent and ascent controlled.
