Dumbbell Alternating Extension

The dumbbell alternating triceps extension is an isolation exercise in which one arm extends a dumbbell overhead at a time. It primarily trains the triceps, especially their role in straightening the elbow, while the shoulder and core help keep the body steady. It can support arm-strength and muscle-building goals when performed with controlled resistance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding one dumbbell overhead in one hand with the arm nearly straight.
  2. Set your position by bracing your abdomen, keeping the upper arm close to your head, and pointing the elbow upward.
  3. Lower the dumbbell slowly behind your head by bending only the elbow. Keep the upper arm as still as possible and avoid arching the lower back.
  4. Extend the elbow to raise the dumbbell back overhead, stopping short of forcefully locking the elbow. Complete the planned repetitions, then switch arms.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. Choose a dumbbell that lets you control both the lowering and lifting phases without swinging.
  2. Keep the elbow controlled. Do not let it flare far outward or drift forward; excessive movement shifts work away from the triceps.
  3. Protect your back. Keep the ribs down and abdomen braced rather than leaning backward to finish the repetition.
