Dumbbell Incline One-Arm Press Stability Ball

The dumbbell incline one-arm press on a stability ball is an upper-chest pressing exercise performed while the upper back is supported on an angled stability ball. Pressing one dumbbell at a time challenges the upper chest, shoulders, triceps, and trunk stability. It can support upper-body strength, pressing control, and balance when performed with a manageable load.

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Place a stability ball on a non-slip surface and sit in front of it with one dumbbell held securely at shoulder level.
  2. Find the incline position: Walk your feet forward and lean back until your upper back rests on the ball. Raise the hips so the torso forms a stable incline, with feet flat and wide enough for balance.
  3. Set the working arm: Hold the dumbbell beside the upper chest with the wrist neutral and elbow slightly below shoulder level. Brace the abdomen and keep the opposite arm out for balance if needed.
  4. Press upward: Exhale and press the dumbbell up and slightly inward until the elbow is nearly straight. Keep the ball steady and avoid rotating the torso.
  5. Lower with control: Inhale and lower the dumbbell slowly back toward the upper chest without letting the elbow drop excessively behind the body.
  6. Finish safely: Complete the planned repetitions, return the dumbbell to the shoulder, sit upright with control, and then change sides. Use a lighter weight if you cannot keep the ball stable.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize stability: Choose a load that lets you keep the ball, hips, and torso steady throughout every repetition.
  2. Keep the wrist stacked: Align the dumbbell over the wrist and forearm rather than allowing the wrist to bend backward.
  3. Use a controlled range: Lower only as far as you can without shoulder discomfort, torso rotation, or loss of ball position.
  4. Breathe deliberately: Exhale during the press and inhale during the controlled lowering phase.
