Dumbbell Incline One-Arm Press

The dumbbell incline one-arm press is a unilateral chest press performed while lying on an incline bench. It primarily targets the upper chest, while the triceps and front shoulders assist and the trunk resists rotation. It supports upper-body pressing strength, side-to-side balance, and controlled shoulder stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set an incline bench to a moderate angle and sit with a dumbbell resting securely on one thigh.
  2. Lie back, use your thigh to guide the dumbbell to shoulder level, and plant both feet firmly on the floor.
  3. Set your position with your shoulder blade gently pulled back and down, wrist stacked over the elbow, and the free arm resting by your side or holding the bench.
  4. Press the dumbbell up over the upper chest while exhaling, keeping the forearm nearly vertical and avoiding rotation through the torso.
  5. Lower slowly on an inhale until the elbow is near bench level or your shoulder remains comfortable; keep the elbow slightly below the line of the shoulder rather than flared wide.
  6. Complete the repetitions, return the dumbbell safely to your thigh before sitting up, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. The unilateral setup can make a weight feel less stable than two-arm pressing.
  2. Keep your ribs and hips steady. Do not twist toward or away from the working arm as you press.
  3. Control the bottom position. Stop short of any pinching or sharp shoulder discomfort, and do not bounce the dumbbell.
