Dumbbell One-Arm Incline Chest Press

The dumbbell one-arm incline chest press is a unilateral pressing exercise performed on an incline bench. It primarily trains the upper chest while also working the front shoulders and triceps, with the torso resisting rotation as one arm presses. It supports upper-body pressing strength, muscular development, and side-to-side strength balance.

Instructions

  1. Set an incline bench to a moderate angle and sit with a dumbbell resting securely on the working-side thigh.
  2. Lie back, use the thigh to guide the dumbbell to shoulder level, and place both feet firmly on the floor. Keep the non-working arm braced on the bench or resting across the torso without pushing.
  3. Hold the dumbbell above the working-side upper chest with a neutral wrist and elbow slightly below the hand. Retract the shoulder blade gently and keep the ribs and hips steady.
  4. Exhale as you press the dumbbell upward and slightly inward until the elbow is extended without forcefully locking it. Do not let the torso twist toward the loaded side.
  5. Inhale as you lower the dumbbell slowly to a comfortable depth, keeping the elbow angled roughly 30–60 degrees from the torso.
  6. Complete the chosen repetitions with control, return the dumbbell safely to the thigh before sitting up, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load. Unilateral pressing challenges stability; reduce the weight if your ribs flare, hips shift, or torso rotates.
  2. Keep the wrist stacked. Align the dumbbell over the forearm rather than allowing the wrist to bend backward.
  3. Control the descent. Lower smoothly and avoid bouncing or dropping the elbow far below a comfortable shoulder position.
  4. Use a similar range of motion and number of repetitions on each side.
