Indoor Rowing

Indoor rowing is a continuous cardio activity performed on a rowing machine. It trains cardiovascular endurance while involving the legs, back, arms, and core through a coordinated rowing stroke, supporting aerobic fitness and total-body conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the footrests so the straps secure the balls of your feet, then sit tall and hold the handle with both hands.
  2. Begin at the catch with bent knees, straight arms, and a neutral back while keeping the chain level.
  3. Drive through your legs first, then swing the torso slightly back and pull the handle toward the lower ribs.
  4. Finish with legs straight, shoulders relaxed, and the handle close to the body without leaning excessively back.
  5. Return in reverse order: extend the arms, hinge forward from the hips, then bend the knees to glide smoothly to the catch.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the drive powerful but controlled, and make the recovery slower than the drive.
  2. Maintain a neutral spine instead of rounding the lower back at the catch.
  3. Let the legs initiate each stroke; avoid pulling with the arms before the leg drive is nearly complete.
  4. Use a pace and resistance setting that allow you to maintain consistent technique.
