Kettlebell Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift

The kettlebell single-leg Romanian deadlift is a unilateral hip-hinge exercise performed by balancing on one leg while lowering and raising a kettlebell. It primarily trains the hamstrings and glutes while developing hip control, balance, and posterior-chain strength.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall on one leg with the kettlebell in the hand opposite the supporting leg.
  2. Brace your trunk softly and keep a slight bend in the supporting knee.
  3. Hinge at the hips, sending the free leg straight back as the kettlebell travels toward the floor.
  4. Keep your hips as square as possible and maintain a long, neutral spine.
  5. Drive through the supporting foot and extend the hips to return to standing.
  6. Complete the desired repetitions with control, then switch sides.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a kettlebell load that allows you to keep your balance and pelvic position controlled.
  2. Think of reaching the kettlebell back and down rather than squatting straight down.
  3. Keep pressure spread across the supporting foot instead of shifting onto the toes.
  4. Use a shorter range of motion if your hips begin to rotate or your back loses its neutral position.
