Machine Lateral Raise

The machine lateral raise is a resistance exercise that trains shoulder abduction against a guided load. It primarily targets the side deltoids and supports shoulder strength and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the seat and pads so the pad contacts the outside of each upper arm near the elbow.
  2. Sit tall with your back supported, feet planted, and hands on the handles if the machine provides them.
  3. Begin with your upper arms close to your sides and brace your torso without leaning.
  4. Raise your arms out to the sides in a smooth arc until your upper arms are about level with your shoulders.
  5. Pause briefly, then lower the pads under control to the starting position.

Technique tips

  1. Use a load that lets you lift without swinging, shrugging, or pushing through the pads.
  2. Keep your neck relaxed and avoid raising your shoulders toward your ears.
  3. Control the lowering phase rather than letting the weight stack pull your arms down.
  4. Use a comfortable range of motion and stop if the movement causes sharp pain.
