Machine Standing Calf Raise

The machine standing calf raise is a lower-leg isolation exercise performed by raising and lowering the heels against machine resistance. It primarily trains the gastrocnemius, with the soleus assisting, and supports calf strength and muscular development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the shoulder pads and load so you can stand upright with the balls of both feet on the platform and your heels free to move.
  2. Place your shoulders under the pads, brace your torso, and straighten your knees without locking them forcefully.
  3. Lower your heels slowly until you feel a comfortable stretch through your calves.
  4. Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as you can while keeping your body still.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower under control and repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a load that lets you control the bottom stretch and the full rise without bouncing.
  2. Keep pressure even across both feet and avoid rolling onto the outer edges of your feet.
  3. Do not bend your knees to use momentum or turn the movement into a squat.
  4. Exhale as you rise and keep the return slower than the upward phase.
