Mountain Climber

The mountain climber is a bodyweight exercise performed from a high-plank position while alternating knee drives toward the chest. It challenges the abdominals, shoulders, hip flexors, and legs while also raising cardiovascular demand, supporting core endurance and full-body conditioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start in a high plank with hands under shoulders, arms straight, legs extended, and feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Brace your abdominals and keep your head, spine, and hips in one long line; do not let the lower back sag.
  3. Exhale as you draw one knee toward your chest, keeping the supporting foot planted lightly on the floor.
  4. Return that leg to the starting position, then bring the other knee forward. Continue alternating with controlled, even movement.
  5. Move faster only while your shoulders stay stable and your hips remain level. Stop or slow down if form breaks down.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize plank alignment: keep ribs drawn in and avoid lifting the hips high or dropping them toward the floor.
  2. Use a manageable pace: clean alternating knee drives are more useful than uncontrolled speed.
  3. Protect your wrists: spread your fingers, press through the whole hand, and keep the shoulders stacked over the hands.
