Push-Up to Side Plank

The push-up to side plank combines a standard push-up with a rotation into a side plank. It primarily trains the chest, while the shoulders, triceps, abdominals, and obliques support pressing and trunk stability. It can help develop upper-body strength, core control, and coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start in a high plank with hands under or slightly wider than the shoulders, legs straight, and your body in one line from head to heels.
  2. Brace your abdomen and lower your chest by bending the elbows, keeping them angled slightly back rather than flared far out.
  3. Press through both palms to return to the high plank without allowing the hips to sag or rise.
  4. Shift weight into one hand and the outer edge of the same-side foot, then rotate your chest open into a side plank.
  5. Reach the free arm toward the ceiling, keeping the supporting shoulder stacked over the wrist and the hips lifted.
  6. Return with control to the high plank, perform the next push-up, and rotate to the other side. Stop if you cannot keep the shoulder and trunk controlled.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the body rigid: squeeze the glutes and brace the abdomen during both the push-up and rotation.
  2. Move slowly through the turn: rotate the torso as one unit instead of twisting only through the low back.
  3. Protect the wrists and shoulders: spread the fingers, press evenly through the palm, and keep the supporting shoulder from collapsing.
  4. Scale the movement if needed: perform the push-up from the knees while maintaining a controlled side-plank rotation.
