Smith Machine Split Squat

The Smith Machine Split Squat is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed in a staggered stance under a guided bar. It primarily trains the quadriceps while the glutes assist with hip extension and pelvic control. It supports lower-body strength, single-leg control, and balanced development between sides.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar around upper-chest height and place it across your upper back, not your neck.
  2. Stand in a staggered stance with one foot forward and the other behind, keeping both feet pointing generally forward.
  3. Unrack the bar, brace your torso, and lower straight down by bending both knees.
  4. Keep the front foot flat and allow the rear heel to rise naturally as you descend.
  5. Lower under control to a comfortable depth while keeping the front knee tracking in line with the toes.
  6. Press through the front foot to return to the starting position, then complete the other side evenly.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a stance length that lets you lower smoothly without losing balance or lifting the front heel.
  2. Keep your torso tall and avoid folding forward as you descend.
  3. Use a controlled load that allows the same range of motion on both sides.
  4. Re-engage the Smith bar’s safety hooks before stepping away from the machine.
