Smith Machine Standing Shoulder Press

The Smith Machine Standing Shoulder Press is a barbell pressing exercise performed while standing under the guided bar path of a Smith machine. It primarily trains the shoulders, with the triceps and upper trapezius assisting, and supports upper-body pressing strength and overhead control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar around upper-chest height and load it evenly; stand facing the bar with your feet about hip width apart.
  2. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width, brace your abdomen, and keep your chest tall.
  3. Unrack the bar and press it upward until your arms are straight overhead without forcefully locking the elbows.
  4. Lower the bar under control to the upper chest or collarbone area while keeping your wrists stacked over your forearms.
  5. Finish the set by returning the bar to the rack hooks securely before releasing your grip.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a load that allows you to keep your ribs down rather than leaning back excessively.
  2. Keep your head neutral and allow the bar to travel close to your face as it moves overhead.
  3. Use a smooth, controlled lowering phase instead of letting the guided bar drop quickly.
  4. Check that both bar hooks are fully engaged before stepping away from the machine.
