Stability Ball Dumbbell Sit-Up

The Stability Ball Dumbbell Sit-Up is a weighted abdominal exercise performed with the lower back supported on a stability ball. It trains the rectus abdominis through a large, controlled range of motion while the hips and trunk stabilizers help maintain balance. It can support core strength and progressive abdominal training.

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit on a stability ball and walk your feet forward until the ball supports your lower and middle back. Keep your feet about hip-width apart and firmly planted.
  2. Hold the dumbbell: Grip one light dumbbell securely with both hands and hold it close to your chest. Brace your abdomen and keep your hips lifted.
  3. Lower with control: Lean back over the ball, allowing your torso to extend comfortably while keeping your feet stable and the dumbbell close to your chest.
  4. Sit up: Exhale and curl your rib cage toward your pelvis, lifting your shoulders and upper back from the ball. Keep your neck neutral and avoid pulling with your arms.
  5. Return and repeat: Inhale as you slowly return to the extended position. Keep the ball from rolling, maintain control throughout, and use a lighter dumbbell if balance or form is lost.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load: Start with a light dumbbell; the ball makes the movement less stable than a floor sit-up.
  2. Keep the hips high: Letting the hips drop can make the ball roll and reduce control.
  3. Move through the trunk: Initiate each repetition by curling the ribs toward the pelvis rather than swinging the dumbbell or jerking the neck.
  4. Use a pain-free range: Do not force deep back extension over the ball; reduce the range if it is uncomfortable.
