Stability Ball Weighted Sit-Up

The stability ball weighted sit-up is an abdominal exercise performed while lying back over a stability ball and holding external weight securely against the chest. It primarily trains the rectus abdominis through a controlled trunk-flexion range, with the hip flexors assisting. It can support core strength and progressive abdominal resistance training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Sit on a stability ball, then walk your feet forward until your lower back is supported by the ball. Keep your feet flat, about hip-width apart, and bend your knees.
  2. Secure the weight: Hold a light weight plate close against the center of your chest with both hands. Brace your abdomen and keep your neck long.
  3. Lower with control: Lean back over the ball, allowing the hips and upper back to extend comfortably. Keep your feet planted and stop before you lose a stable position.
  4. Rise smoothly: Exhale as you curl your rib cage toward your pelvis and return to an upright position. Keep the weight against your chest, then lower slowly for the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: Master the bodyweight position or use a very light plate before increasing load.
  2. Keep the ball stable: Press through both feet evenly and avoid letting the ball roll sideways.
  3. Do not pull with the neck: Keep your chin gently tucked and initiate the rise by curling the torso.
