Stability Ball Hand and Foot Exchange

The Stability Ball Hand-to-Foot Exchange is a supine core exercise in which a stability ball is passed between the hands and feet while the arms and legs lift. It primarily trains the abdominal muscles, especially the rectus abdominis and deep core control, while also challenging hip flexors and shoulder stability. It supports core strength, coordination, and control of trunk position.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Lie face up on the floor with your legs straight, arms extended overhead, and the stability ball held between both hands.
  2. Lift with control: Brace your abdomen and press your lower back gently toward the floor. Raise your arms, ball, and straight legs toward the center without swinging.
  3. Exchange the ball: At the top, grip the ball firmly between your feet or ankles and release it from your hands.
  4. Lower and repeat: Slowly lower the arms behind you and the ball held by the feet toward the floor without losing lower-back control. On the next repetition, lift again and pass the ball back to your hands.
  5. Keep the range appropriate: Stop the lowering phase before your lower back arches or your shoulders become uncomfortable.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize lumbar control: Keep the ribs down and avoid letting the lower back lift from the floor.
  2. Move slowly: A controlled exchange is more useful than lifting the limbs quickly or using momentum.
  3. Scale the range: Keep the arms or legs higher if full lowering causes back arching.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you lift and exchange the ball; do not hold your breath.
