Standing Barbell Rollout

The standing barbell rollout is an advanced core exercise performed by rolling a barbell forward from a standing position and pulling it back under control. It primarily trains the abdominal muscles to resist spinal extension, while the shoulders and lats assist with the movement. It supports core strength, trunk control, and overhead stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Place a barbell with round weight plates on a clear, non-slip floor.
  2. Stand behind the bar with feet about hip-width apart and grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width.
  3. Brace your abdomen, bend at the hips and knees, and roll the bar forward slowly while keeping your arms straight.
  4. Extend only as far as you can maintain a neutral spine without your hips sagging.
  5. Pull the bar back by tightening your abdomen and lats, then return to a tall standing position with control.

Technique tips

  1. Use bumper plates or plates that roll evenly; do not use a bar that catches or wobbles.
  2. Keep your ribs drawn down and avoid arching your lower back as the bar moves away.
  3. Start with a short range of motion and increase it only when you can return without losing position.
  4. Stop the set if you cannot control the return or feel strain in your lower back.
