Standing Thoracic Rotation

Standing Thoracic Rotation is a bodyweight mobility exercise that moves the upper back through controlled rotation while the hips remain relatively still. It primarily engages the obliques and upper-back muscles while supporting thoracic mobility, posture awareness, and rotational control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart and soften your knees.
  2. Place your hands across your chest or hold your arms in front of you, keeping your shoulders relaxed.
  3. Brace your midsection lightly and rotate your rib cage to one side without shifting your feet.
  4. Pause briefly at a comfortable end range, then return to center with control.
  5. Repeat to the other side, keeping your hips facing forward throughout.

Technique tips

  1. Let the rotation come from your upper back rather than from twisting the knees or feet.
  2. Move slowly and stay within a range that feels comfortable and controlled.
  3. Keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis instead of leaning backward as you turn.
  4. Exhale gently during the rotation and avoid forcing the end range.
