V Bar Pull-Up

The V-Bar Pull-Up is a close neutral-grip vertical pulling exercise performed using a V-shaped handle suspended from a pull-up bar. It primarily trains the lats and upper back, with substantial assistance from the biceps and forearms. It supports upper-body pulling strength, grip strength, and bodyweight control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Suspend the V-bar handle from a stable pull-up bar and ensure it cannot shift, rotate excessively, or come loose.
  2. Take the start position: Grip the V-bar handles with palms facing each other, hang with straight arms, and keep your legs still or lightly crossed behind you.
  3. Pull upward: Draw your shoulder blades down and back, then pull your elbows down toward your ribs until your upper chest approaches the handle.
  4. Lower with control: Descend slowly to a full hang without shrugging the shoulders, then repeat. Stop if the handle, bar, or grip feels unstable.

Technique tips

  1. Start from the back: Initiate each repetition by depressing the shoulder blades rather than immediately bending the elbows.
  2. Avoid swinging: Keep the torso and legs quiet; reduce repetitions if momentum is needed to reach the top.
  3. Use a controlled range: Reach a comfortable full hang and pull only as high as you can without losing shoulder position.
