Alternating Reach and Catch

Alternating Reach and Catch is a light coordination drill in which you reach for and catch a lightly tossed ball with alternating hands. It primarily challenges the shoulders and arms while developing hand-eye coordination, reaction timing, and controlled reaching. It can be used as a warm-up or as low-impact movement practice.

Instructions

  1. Choose a light, soft ball and stand in an open area with your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Hold the ball around chest height, keep a tall posture, and relax your shoulders away from your ears.
  3. Gently toss the ball upward and slightly in front of you, reaching with one hand to catch it under control.
  4. Return the ball to a comfortable position, then toss it again and catch it with the opposite hand.
  5. Alternate hands for smooth, controlled repetitions while keeping your torso steady and your knees soft.
  6. Use only a toss height you can catch comfortably. Stop or reduce the range if you lose control of the ball or feel shoulder discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the toss low and consistent so the drill emphasizes control rather than chasing the ball.
  2. Watch the ball from release to catch and receive it with relaxed fingers rather than stiff arms.
  3. Keep your ribs stacked over your hips instead of leaning back to reach overhead.
  4. Start slowly, then increase the rhythm only while every catch remains controlled.
