Medicine Ball Overhead Throw

The medicine ball overhead throw is an explosive throwing drill in which a medicine ball is driven from behind the head and released forward overhead. It develops upper-body power, especially through the shoulders and triceps, while the core, hips, and legs help transfer force. It can support athletic power, coordination, and full-body explosiveness.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the area: Use a clear throwing space or a sturdy wall intended for medicine-ball throws. Choose a ball weight you can control explosively.
  2. Set your stance: Stand facing the target with feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and the ball held with both hands behind your head.
  3. Load the throw: Brace your core and slightly bend at the hips and knees while keeping your chest lifted and spine neutral.
  4. Throw forward: Drive through the legs and hips, extend the arms forcefully, and release the ball forward overhead toward the target.
  5. Finish safely: Follow through naturally, regain balance, and retrieve the ball only after it has stopped moving. Reset before every repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable ball: The ball should move fast without forcing you to arch your lower back or lose control.
  2. Generate force from the ground: Coordinate leg and hip drive with the arm action instead of throwing with the arms alone.
  3. Keep the path clear: Never throw toward people, fragile surfaces, or an unsuitable wall, and do not attempt to catch a fast rebound.
