Band Bench Press

The resistance band bench press is a horizontal pressing exercise performed lying on a bench, with resistance bands providing tension as you press. It primarily trains the chest, with the triceps and shoulders assisting. It supports upper-body pushing strength and chest muscle development.

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Place a resistance band beneath the bench so both ends come up evenly beside your torso. Check that the band and bench are stable and undamaged.
  2. Lie in position: Lie face up with your feet planted on the floor, upper back and hips supported by the bench, and a natural curve in your lower back.
  3. Take the band ends: Hold one end in each hand at chest level, with wrists neutral and elbows slightly below shoulder height.
  4. Press upward: Exhale and press the bands up and slightly inward until your arms are nearly straight. Keep your shoulders pulled down and back against the bench.
  5. Return with control: Inhale as you lower your hands toward the sides of your chest, keeping the band under control and your elbows at roughly a 30–60 degree angle from your torso.
  6. Finish safely: Complete the set without letting the bands snap back. Release tension carefully before sitting up.

Technique tips

  1. Choose manageable tension: Start with a band that allows smooth, controlled repetitions without twisting your wrists or losing shoulder position.
  2. Keep the setup even: Unequal band lengths or off-center placement can pull one arm out of position; reset before starting the set.
  3. Do not lock out forcefully: Finish with nearly straight elbows while keeping control, rather than snapping into elbow lockout.
