Barbell Pullover and Press

The barbell pullover and press combines a controlled pullover with a pressing phase while lying on a bench. It primarily trains the chest, with meaningful involvement from the triceps, lats, and shoulders. This compound exercise can support upper-body strength, pressing coordination, and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a barbell with a manageable load and lie flat on a stable bench with your feet planted on the floor.
  2. Hold the bar above your chest with a slightly wider-than-shoulder-width overhand grip; keep your wrists straight and elbows softly bent.
  3. Lower the bar backward in a controlled arc until it is behind your head, only as far as your shoulders can move comfortably.
  4. Pull the bar back over your chest using your chest and lats, keeping your ribs controlled rather than excessively arching your lower back.
  5. Lower the bar toward the mid-chest, then press it upward until your elbows are straight without forcefully locking them. Repeat smoothly.
  6. Use a spotter or safety supports when appropriate, and stop if you feel sharp pain or loss of shoulder control.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: the transition between the pullover and press can be demanding on the shoulders.
  2. Keep the movement slow and controlled; do not use momentum to swing the bar behind your head.
  3. Breathe in as the bar moves back or down, and breathe out as you pull it over the chest and press.
  4. Keep your feet planted and your upper back in contact with the bench throughout the set.
