Dumbbell Press

The dumbbell bench press is a horizontal pressing exercise performed lying on a flat bench with a dumbbell in each hand. It primarily trains the chest, while the triceps and shoulders assist the movement. It supports upper-body pushing strength, chest muscle development, and side-to-side strength balance.

Instructions

  1. Set up a flat bench and choose dumbbells you can control. Sit on the bench with a dumbbell resting on each thigh.
  2. Lie back while using your thighs to guide the dumbbells to either side of your chest. Place your feet firmly on the floor and keep your head, upper back, and hips in contact with the bench.
  3. Press the dumbbells upward and slightly inward until your arms are straight but not forcefully locked. Keep your wrists stacked over your forearms.
  4. Lower slowly with control until the dumbbells reach chest level and your elbows are comfortably below or level with the bench. Keep your shoulder blades gently pulled back and down.
  5. Repeat for the planned repetitions. After the final repetition, bring the dumbbells to your thighs before sitting up; use assistance for challenging loads.

Technique tips

  1. Keep your shoulders stable: avoid allowing them to roll forward at the bottom of the repetition.
  2. Use a controlled range: lower only as far as you can maintain a comfortable shoulder position and neutral wrists.
  3. Do not bounce the dumbbells or rush the lowering phase; control improves both technique and load management.
  4. Breathe steadily: inhale as you lower and exhale as you press.
