Band Shoulder Press

The band shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise performed by pushing resistance-band handles from shoulder height to overhead. It primarily trains the deltoids and also works the triceps while challenging shoulder stability and core control. It supports upper-body strength and muscular endurance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the band: Stand centered on a resistance band with feet about hip-width apart, holding a handle in each hand. Ensure the band is secure under both feet.
  2. Start tall: Bring the handles to shoulder height with palms facing forward or slightly inward. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and maintain a neutral spine.
  3. Press overhead: Exhale as you press both handles upward until your arms are nearly straight overhead. Keep your wrists aligned with your forearms and avoid shrugging excessively.
  4. Control the return: Inhale and lower the handles slowly back to shoulder height, keeping the band under tension and your elbows controlled.
  5. Repeat safely: Complete controlled repetitions without leaning backward. Stop if the band shifts, feels damaged, or causes sharp discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Choose manageable resistance: Use a band that lets you keep a neutral spine through every repetition.
  2. Keep ribs stacked: Brace your abdomen and avoid flaring the ribs or arching the lower back as the hands move overhead.
  3. Use a smooth tempo: Do not let the band snap you down; control both the press and the lowering phase.
  4. Inspect the band: Check for tears, worn areas, or slipping before each set.
