Dumbbell Alternating Shoulder Press

The dumbbell alternating shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise in which one dumbbell is pressed at a time while the other remains at shoulder level. It primarily trains the deltoids, with the triceps assisting and the core helping stabilize the torso. It supports shoulder strength, pressing coordination, and balanced upper-body development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward or slightly inward.
  2. Brace your core, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and keep your wrists straight over your elbows.
  3. Press one dumbbell upward until the arm is nearly straight overhead, without leaning back or forcefully locking the elbow.
  4. Lower it with control to shoulder height while keeping the other dumbbell still and the torso upright.
  5. Press the other side in the same manner, alternating sides for the planned repetitions.
  6. Finish safely by returning both dumbbells to shoulder height, then lowering them under control; use a lighter load if your back arches or shoulder position is painful.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the torso quiet: avoid using leg drive, twisting, or leaning to move the dumbbells.
  2. Use a manageable load: the non-pressing arm should be controllable at shoulder height throughout the set.
  3. Breathe steadily: exhale as you press and inhale as you lower, while maintaining abdominal tension.
  4. Use a comfortable range: lower only as far as you can keep the shoulder and wrist aligned comfortably.
