Dumbbell Alternating Press

The alternating dumbbell shoulder press is an overhead pressing exercise in which one dumbbell is pressed at a time while the other arm stays in the starting position. It primarily trains the deltoids and triceps, while requiring trunk control to keep the torso steady. It supports shoulder strength, pressing coordination, and balanced side-to-side development.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward or slightly inward.
  2. Brace: Tighten your abdomen, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and keep your wrists aligned over your elbows.
  3. Press one arm: Exhale as you press one dumbbell overhead until the elbow is straight but not forcefully locked; keep the weight over the shoulder without leaning back.
  4. Alternate: Lower that dumbbell slowly to shoulder height while keeping the other dumbbell still, then press the opposite arm. Continue alternating with controlled repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Use manageable loads: Choose dumbbells that let you keep your spine neutral throughout the set.
  2. Avoid leaning back: If your ribs flare or lower back arches, reduce the load or range of motion.
  3. Keep the tempo even: Lower each dumbbell under control and avoid using leg drive or momentum.
