Barbell Seated Shoulder Press

The barbell seated shoulder press is a compound upper-body exercise performed by pressing a barbell overhead from a seated position. It primarily trains the shoulders, with the triceps assisting the press, and supports upper-body pressing strength and muscular development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a barbell at upper-chest height and sit upright on a sturdy bench with your feet firmly on the floor.
  2. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width and bring it to the front of your upper chest.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and press the bar upward in a controlled path until your arms are extended overhead.
  4. Keep your head neutral and avoid excessive arching of the lower back as the bar passes your face.
  5. Lower the bar under control to the upper chest, then rack it securely when finished.

Technique tips

  1. Use a load that allows you to keep the bar path smooth and controlled.
  2. Keep your wrists stacked over your forearms rather than bent far backward.
  3. Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower the bar.
  4. Use a spotter or appropriate rack setup when handling challenging loads.
