Barbell Seated Press

The seated barbell overhead press is a compound upper-body exercise in which a barbell is pressed from shoulder level to overhead while seated. It primarily develops the deltoids, with the triceps assisting the press and the upper back helping stabilize the position. It supports shoulder strength, pressing capacity, and upper-body muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a bench with an upright backrest in a rack and position the bar at about upper-chest height. Load it evenly and use a weight you can control.
  2. Sit tall with your back supported, feet firmly on the floor, and hands slightly wider than shoulder width. Keep the wrists stacked over the forearms.
  3. Unrack the bar and hold it at the upper chest or front of the shoulders with the elbows slightly in front of the bar. Brace your abdomen and keep your ribs down.
  4. Press upward by driving the bar vertically overhead. Move your head slightly back only as needed for clearance, then bring it through so the bar finishes over the middle of your body.
  5. Finish and lower with straight but not forcefully locked elbows, then lower the bar slowly to the starting position. Re-rack the bar securely after the set.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the bar path close to your face and finish with the bar stacked over your shoulders and hips rather than forward of the body.
  2. Avoid excessive lower-back arching; brace your abdomen and use the backrest for support instead of turning the lift into a standing-style press.
  3. Control the descent rather than dropping the bar to the shoulders, and keep both feet planted throughout the repetition.
  4. Use rack safety supports or a spotter when working near your limit, especially when getting the bar into and out of position.
