Barbell Shoulder Press

The barbell shoulder press is a compound overhead pressing exercise performed by driving a barbell from shoulder level to overhead. It primarily trains the deltoids and also works the triceps and upper chest while requiring trunk control. It supports upper-body pressing strength and shoulder muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a barbell in a rack at about upper-chest height and load it evenly. Stand with feet about hip-width apart and grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width.
  2. Unrack the bar and hold it at the upper chest with wrists neutral and elbows slightly in front of the bar. Brace the abdomen and keep the ribs from flaring.
  3. Press the bar upward in a controlled path, moving your head slightly back only enough to let the bar pass. Keep the bar close to the face and torso.
  4. Finish with the bar over the middle of the feet, arms straight but not forced, and shoulders actively supporting the load. Do not lean the torso backward.
  5. Lower the bar slowly to the upper chest, reset your brace, and repeat. Use a manageable load and return the bar to the rack securely when finished.

Technique tips

  1. Brace before every repetition: tighten the abdomen and glutes to keep the lower back from excessively arching.
  2. Use a close bar path: move the head out of the way briefly, then bring it back under the bar at the top.
  3. Control the descent: lower the bar smoothly rather than dropping it onto the shoulders.
  4. Choose an appropriate load: reduce the weight if you cannot keep the torso upright or complete the range with control.
