Boat Pose

Boat Pose is a seated yoga balance in which the torso and legs form a V shape while the core stabilizes the body. It primarily strengthens the abdominal muscles and hip flexors while challenging posture and balance. It can support core endurance, body control, and yoga practice.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start seated on the floor with your knees bent, feet flat, and spine tall. Place your hands lightly behind your thighs.
  2. Lean back slightly from the hips while keeping your chest lifted and your spine long; avoid rounding the lower back.
  3. Lift your feet until your shins are roughly parallel with the floor. Balance on your sitting bones and engage your abdominal muscles.
  4. Extend your arms forward alongside your legs with palms facing inward. Stay here, or slowly straighten the knees only if you can keep a long spine.
  5. Hold and breathe steadily, keeping your shoulders relaxed and neck long. To finish, bend the knees and lower the feet with control.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize spinal length. Keep the chest open and reduce the leg height or bend the knees if your lower back rounds.
  2. Use a manageable version. Keeping the knees bent is the standard accessible position; straight legs are not required.
  3. Breathe continuously. Avoid holding your breath while bracing the abdomen, and keep the shoulders away from the ears.
  4. Enter and exit slowly. Use controlled movement rather than dropping the feet or rocking through the lower back.
