Cable Rope Incline Tricep Extension

The cable rope incline tricep extension is an isolation exercise performed on an incline bench using a rope attachment on a cable machine. It primarily trains the triceps through controlled elbow extension, especially in a stretched overhead-style position, and supports upper-arm strength and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the cable: Attach a rope to a low cable pulley and place an incline bench with its head end facing away from the pulley. Use a light load first.
  2. Take position: Sit and lie back on the bench, holding one end of the rope in each hand. Bring the rope behind and slightly above your head with your elbows bent and pointed upward.
  3. Stabilize: Keep your upper arms mostly fixed, shoulders set against the bench, wrists neutral, and feet firmly on the floor.
  4. Extend: Exhale as you straighten your elbows, moving the rope ends upward until your arms are nearly straight. Keep tension on the cable and do not forcefully lock the elbows.
  5. Return with control: Inhale and slowly bend the elbows to lower the rope back behind your head until the triceps are comfortably stretched. Repeat without allowing the elbows to drift widely.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize elbow position: Keep the elbows pointed generally upward and avoid turning the repetition into a shoulder movement.
  2. Control the stretch: Lower only as far as you can maintain stable shoulders and a neutral wrist position.
  3. Use manageable resistance: If your elbows flare, your lower back arches, or the cable pulls you out of position, reduce the load.
