Cable Rope Overhead Tricep Extension

The cable rope overhead triceps extension is an isolation exercise performed with a rope attachment on a cable machine. Extending the elbows overhead primarily trains the triceps, especially in a lengthened position. It supports triceps strength and muscle development for pressing movements and upper-body training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the pulley low and attach a rope handle. Select a light load that you can control smoothly.
  2. Face away from the machine, hold both rope ends, and step forward until the cable is taut. Bring your hands behind and slightly above your head.
  3. Stagger your stance, brace your abdomen, and keep your chest lifted without excessively arching your lower back. Point your elbows forward and keep them relatively still.
  4. Exhale and extend your elbows until your arms are nearly straight overhead. Separate the rope ends slightly only as far as you can without moving the elbows.
  5. Inhale and return slowly by bending the elbows until you feel a comfortable triceps stretch. Keep tension on the cable, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows fixed: If they flare widely or drift backward, reduce the load and reset your position.
  2. Protect your lower back: Brace your abdomen and use a staggered stance rather than leaning back to finish repetitions.
  3. Use a controlled range: Lower only to a comfortable stretch and avoid snapping into a hard elbow lockout.
  4. Prioritize control over load: Use a steady tempo and keep cable tension through the return.
