Cable Wrist Curl

The cable wrist curl is an isolation exercise performed by flexing the wrists against cable resistance. It primarily trains the forearm flexors and grip-related strength while providing consistent tension through the movement. It can support stronger wrists and forearms for lifting and everyday gripping tasks.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the cable: Attach a straight handle to a low cable pulley and select a light, controllable load.
  2. Get positioned: Sit or kneel facing the pulley, hold the handle with an underhand grip, and rest your forearms on your thighs or a bench with your wrists just beyond the edge.
  3. Start long: Keep your forearms still and allow the handle to roll slightly toward your fingers as your wrists extend comfortably.
  4. Curl the wrists: Flex only your wrists to draw the handle upward toward your forearms, keeping your elbows and forearms fixed.
  5. Return with control: Lower slowly to the stretched position without letting the weight stack slam, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load: The wrist flexors are small muscles; prioritize smooth, pain-free repetitions over heavy resistance.
  2. Keep the forearms anchored: Do not turn the exercise into an elbow curl or pull with the shoulders.
  3. Control the stretch: Use a comfortable wrist extension range and avoid forcing the joint into an uncomfortable position.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you curl and inhale as you lower.
