Barbell Wrist Curl Palms Up

The barbell wrist curl palms up is an isolation exercise performed with the forearms supported and the palms facing upward. It primarily trains the wrist flexors in the forearms, improving forearm strength, grip support, and wrist control for lifting and everyday tasks. The movement uses a controlled range of motion rather than heavy momentum.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up a bench and a light barbell. Sit on the end of the bench with your feet flat, holding the barbell with an underhand grip and your palms facing upward.
  2. Support your forearms. Rest both forearms across your thighs or on the bench so that your wrists extend just beyond your knees or the bench edge. Keep the forearms still.
  3. Lower under control. Allow the barbell to roll slightly toward the fingers as you extend the wrists, while maintaining a secure grip and avoiding a sudden drop.
  4. Curl the wrists upward. Flex your wrists to raise the barbell as high as comfortably possible, squeezing the forearm muscles at the top. Do not lift with the elbows or shoulders.
  5. Return smoothly and repeat. Lower the barbell slowly to the starting stretch and perform the desired repetitions. Use a load that lets you keep the wrists controlled throughout.

Technique tips

  1. Start lighter than expected. The wrist flexors are small muscles, so a modest load is usually enough for controlled repetitions.
  2. Keep the forearms planted. If your elbows lift or your forearms move, reduce the load and isolate the wrist motion.
  3. Use a smooth tempo. Lower slowly, avoid bouncing at either end of the range, and keep a secure grip as the bar rolls toward the fingers.
  4. Stay in a comfortable range. Do not force excessive wrist extension or flexion; stop the set if sharp pain occurs.
