Dumbbell One-Arm Wrist Curl

The dumbbell one-arm wrist curl is an isolation exercise performed by curling a dumbbell through wrist flexion with one arm at a time. It primarily trains the forearm flexors and grip-supporting muscles. It can help build forearm strength and muscular endurance for lifting and everyday gripping tasks.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Choose a light dumbbell and sit on a bench. Hold it in one hand with an underhand grip, palm facing upward.
  2. Rest that forearm across your thigh or a bench with the wrist just beyond the edge. Keep the forearm still and the elbow bent comfortably.
  3. Allow the dumbbell to lower slowly by extending the wrist, maintaining a secure grip and controlled range of motion.
  4. Flex the wrist to curl the dumbbell upward as far as is comfortable, keeping the hand aligned with the forearm and avoiding elbow movement.
  5. Pause briefly, then lower the weight under control to complete the repetition. Perform the desired repetitions before switching arms.
  6. Stop if you feel sharp pain in the wrist or elbow, and reduce the load or range if control is lost.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the forearm supported so the wrist, rather than the elbow or shoulder, produces the movement.
  2. Use a light load and a slow lowering phase; swinging or gripping excessively hard can reduce control.
  3. Exhale as you curl and inhale as you lower. Keep the motion smooth rather than forcing an extreme range.
  4. Train both sides with similar form and volume, and stop before fatigue causes the wrist to bend sideways.
