Dumbbell Seated One-Arm Wrist Curl

The dumbbell seated one-arm wrist curl is an isolation exercise performed seated with the forearm supported on the thigh and the palm facing up. It primarily trains the forearm flexors and can help build grip-related forearm strength and muscular endurance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on a bench with your feet flat on the floor. Hold a light dumbbell in one hand with your palm facing up.
  2. Support the forearm: Rest that forearm across the same-side thigh, with the wrist and hand extending just beyond the knee.
  3. Start position: Keep the forearm still and allow the dumbbell to roll slightly toward the fingers in a controlled stretch, while maintaining a secure grip.
  4. Curl the wrist: Flex the wrist to raise the dumbbell as high as comfortably possible. Keep the elbow and forearm pressed into the thigh.
  5. Lower slowly: Return the weight under control until the wrist is extended again; do not drop or bounce the dumbbell.
  6. Repeat evenly: Complete the desired repetitions, then switch arms. Use a load that allows smooth, pain-free wrist motion.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the forearm anchored: Movement should come from the wrist, not from lifting the elbow or swinging the arm.
  2. Use a modest load: The wrist has a small range of motion; prioritize controlled repetitions over heavy weight.
  3. Control both directions: Lift smoothly and take extra care during the lowering phase rather than letting the dumbbell pull the wrist down.
  4. Respect discomfort: Stop or reduce the range if you feel sharp pain in the wrist, hand, or forearm.
