Cross Leg Erector Spinae

The Cross-Leg Erector Spinae Stretch is a seated static stretch performed with the legs crossed and the torso gently folded forward. It primarily targets the muscles along the lower back and can also create a mild stretch through the hips and glutes. It supports back mobility, relaxation, and recovery after prolonged sitting or training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on a stable mat with your legs comfortably crossed and your weight even on both sitting bones.
  2. Lengthen your spine: Rest your hands on your thighs or the floor in front of you, relax your shoulders, and sit tall.
  3. Fold forward gently: Exhale and hinge from your hips, allowing your torso to move forward over your crossed legs without forcing the range.
  4. Hold the stretch: Let your head and arms relax, breathe slowly, and hold a mild, comfortable stretch through the lower back for 15–30 seconds.
  5. Return with control: Inhale as you slowly roll or lift back to upright, then switch which leg is in front if desired.

Technique tips

  1. Keep it gentle: Stretch to mild tension, not pain; reduce the forward fold if your lower back feels pinched.
  2. Move from the hips: Avoid aggressively rounding or pulling yourself down with your hands.
  3. Breathe steadily: Use slow exhales to relax into the position rather than bouncing.
