Kneeling Back Stretch

The kneeling back stretch is a gentle floor stretch performed by sitting the hips back toward the heels and reaching the arms forward. It primarily lengthens the back, especially the lower back and lats, while also encouraging relaxed shoulder mobility. It can support flexibility, recovery, and a calming cool-down.

Instructions

  1. Start on hands and knees on a comfortable surface, with your knees about hip-width apart.
  2. Slowly move your hips back toward your heels while keeping your hands reaching forward along the floor.
  3. Lower your chest between or toward your thighs and let your forehead rest lightly on the floor or a comfortable support.
  4. Reach gently through both arms and allow your upper back to lengthen without forcing your shoulders.
  5. Hold the position while breathing slowly and evenly, relaxing your neck and jaw.
  6. To finish, press lightly through your hands and return to hands and knees with control; stop if the position causes sharp pain.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize comfort over depth. Keep the hips higher and the knees wider if that makes the position more comfortable.
  2. Keep your arms active but do not shrug your shoulders toward your ears.
  3. Breathe into your back and sides of the rib cage rather than holding your breath.
  4. Avoid bouncing or forcing your forehead and chest toward the floor.
