Iron Cross Stretch

The Iron Cross Stretch is a supine rotational stretch performed with the arms extended out to the sides while the knees move gently from side to side. It primarily mobilizes and stretches the lower back, obliques, and glutes while encouraging thoracic and hip rotation. It can support mobility, recovery, and comfortable rotational movement.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Lie on your back on a comfortable surface with your legs together, knees bent, and feet flat on the floor.
  2. Extend both arms straight out at shoulder height to form a cross, keeping your shoulders relaxed against the floor.
  3. Keeping your knees together, gently lower them toward one side while allowing your hips and lower back to rotate; keep both shoulders as close to the floor as comfortable.
  4. Hold briefly while breathing slowly, then use your abdominal muscles to bring the knees back through the center and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Move only through a comfortable range. Do not force the knees to the floor or force the shoulders down.
  2. Keep the knees together and move slowly to make the rotation controlled rather than momentum-driven.
  3. Exhale as the knees lower and maintain smooth, relaxed breathing throughout.
