Stability Ball Low Back Stretch

The Stability Ball Low Back Stretch uses an exercise ball to gently lengthen the lower back while supporting the body. It primarily targets the muscles of the lumbar region and can also encourage relaxed movement through the hips and trunk. It can support mobility, recovery, and relief of everyday stiffness when performed comfortably.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the ball: Place a properly inflated stability ball on a clear, non-slip surface near a wall if extra balance support is needed.
  2. Start supported: Kneel in front of the ball and rest your forearms and chest on it, keeping your neck long and shoulders relaxed.
  3. Lengthen the lower back: Slowly roll your body forward over the ball until you feel a gentle, comfortable stretch through the lower back; let your hips move back as needed.
  4. Hold and return: Breathe slowly for a comfortable timed hold, then use your arms and legs to return gradually. Stop if the position causes sharp, increasing, or radiating pain.

Technique tips

  1. Keep it gentle: Aim for mild tension, not an intense backbend or forced range of motion.
  2. Move slowly: Control the ball at all times and use a wall or a less inflated ball if balance is limited.
  3. Breathe naturally: Avoid holding your breath; slow exhalations can help you relax into the position.
