Cross-Legged Forward Fold

The Cross-Legged Forward Fold is a seated stretch performed with the legs crossed and the torso gently folded forward. It mainly stretches the hips and glutes while also lengthening the lower back. It can support hip mobility, relaxation, and flexibility work.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit tall on the floor with your legs comfortably crossed and your weight balanced across both sitting bones.
  2. Rest your hands on your knees or on the floor in front of you, and gently lengthen through the crown of your head.
  3. Exhale and hinge forward from the hips, walking your hands forward only as far as you can keep the movement comfortable.
  4. Let your neck and shoulders relax, breathe slowly, and hold without forcing your chest toward the floor.
  5. Press your hands lightly into the floor and return slowly to an upright seated position. Switch which leg is in front if repeating.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize length over depth: keep your spine long as you fold rather than rounding aggressively through the lower back.
  2. Use comfortable support: sit on a folded towel or cushion if your hips tip backward or the position feels restrictive.
  3. Do not force the stretch: ease out if you feel sharp pain, pinching, numbness, or tingling.
  4. Breathe steadily and allow the range of motion to develop gradually over several relaxed breaths.
