Hip Circles

Hip circles are a controlled mobility exercise in which the hips move through a comfortable circular range of motion. They warm up and mobilize the hip joints while engaging the glutes, core, and muscles around the pelvis for control. This movement can support movement preparation, balance, and comfortable lower-body training.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and arms relaxed or hands resting lightly on your hips.
  2. Brace gently by keeping your ribs stacked over your pelvis and your torso upright.
  3. Shift your hips forward, to one side, back, and to the other side to draw a smooth circle with your pelvis.
  4. Keep both feet grounded and let the movement come from the hips rather than twisting or bending sharply through the lower back.
  5. Complete several slow circles in one direction, then reverse direction with the same controlled, comfortable range.
  6. Stop or reduce the range if you feel sharp pain, pinching, or loss of balance.

Technique tips

  1. Move slowly: Use a smooth, unhurried circle rather than forcing a large range of motion.
  2. Keep the torso quiet: Avoid leaning the chest far forward or backward to make the circle larger.
  3. Use both directions: Circle equally each way to avoid practicing only one movement pattern.
  4. Breathe normally: Do not hold your breath; relax the hips while maintaining light core control.
