Dumbbell Jumping Lunge

The dumbbell jumping lunge is a plyometric lower-body exercise that combines alternating lunges with an explosive jump while holding dumbbells. It primarily trains the quadriceps and also challenges the glutes, hamstrings, and calves. It supports lower-body power, coordination, and conditioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, with your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Step one foot back and lower into a lunge, keeping your front knee aligned with your toes and your torso upright.
  3. Drive through both feet and jump vertically, switching leg positions in the air while keeping the dumbbells close to your sides.
  4. Land softly in a lunge with the opposite foot forward, bending both knees to absorb the landing.
  5. Continue to alternate sides with controlled landings, then stop and return to a stable standing position.

Technique tips

  1. Use a load that allows you to land quietly and keep your balance on every repetition.
  2. Keep your knees tracking in the same direction as your toes rather than letting them collapse inward.
  3. Maintain a braced torso and avoid swinging the dumbbells to create momentum.
  4. Reduce the jump height or use body weight only if you cannot control the landing.
