Dumbbell Standing Calf Raise

The dumbbell standing calf raise is a resistance exercise performed by raising and lowering the heels while standing and holding dumbbells. It primarily trains the gastrocnemius, with the soleus assisting, and supports calf strength and ankle control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Brace your torso, keep your knees straight but not locked, and distribute your weight evenly through both feet.
  3. Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as comfortably possible.
  4. Briefly squeeze your calves at the top without leaning forward or backward.
  5. Lower your heels slowly under control until your feet are flat on the floor, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled range of motion instead of bouncing at the bottom.
  2. Keep the dumbbells close to your sides to avoid shifting your balance.
  3. Keep pressure through the big-toe side and little-toe side of each forefoot rather than rolling outward.
  4. Choose a load that lets you maintain a steady torso and smooth heel movement.
