Dumbbell Fly Stability Ball

The dumbbell fly on a stability ball is a chest isolation exercise performed while the upper back is supported on a stability ball. It primarily trains the pectoral muscles while the shoulders, glutes, and core work to keep the body stable. It can help build chest muscle and improve upper-body control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Hold a light dumbbell in each hand and sit in front of a stability ball.
  2. Walk your feet forward until the ball supports your upper back; keep your feet flat, knees bent, and hips lifted so your torso is roughly parallel to the floor.
  3. Bring the dumbbells above your chest with palms facing each other and a soft bend in the elbows. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Inhale and slowly open your arms in a wide arc until you feel a comfortable chest stretch, keeping the elbow angle nearly unchanged and the ball steady.
  5. Exhale as you bring the dumbbells back together above the chest by squeezing your chest. Use control throughout and safely lower the weights before leaving the ball.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first: the unstable ball makes this fly more demanding than a bench fly.
  2. Keep your hips high and ribs controlled; do not let your lower back sag as the arms open.
  3. Lower only as far as your shoulders remain comfortable, and avoid turning the movement into a dumbbell press by bending and straightening the elbows.
  4. Move slowly and evenly. If the ball shifts excessively, reset your position before continuing.
